I talked to the guy that proposed it before the debate. We agreed that there was a genuine shortfall in welfare provision for males as compared to females. It was amended to ensure that the overall welfare officer should look into this very carefully, in conjuction with the men's officer and the women's officer, and make sure that this didn't become just a silly political stunt. It was made very clear during the debate by the proposer of the motion that if anyone was going to vote for it to score points in some kind of battle of the sexes, they shouldn't vote for it. As it turned out, of the males there about half voted for it, and of the females about 2/3. If he'd just been poking fun or scoring points I'd have voted it down without hesitation.
I realise that I'm always going to fall through the cracks - there really isn't anyone whose area of responsibility covers me. However, this will reduce the chances of male students falling through the cracks.
