to address an actual need?
I think it was, unfortunately, probably intended to make fun of (and de-power) the women's rep. That makes the fact it was proposed and passed quite pathetic.
On the plus side, it could prove to be a valuable addition to the council. After all, apparently aside from Engineering (and probably certain departments like Comp. Sci and physics) at my uni at least, the majority of students in the colleges are female. Interestingly, the more that women get uni degrees, the less valuable they become. There may not necessarily be a direct connection between the devaluing of degrees and women getting them, but since such a connection has been established for specific discipline's degrees in the past, it is something that deserves to be explored.
Getting back to the point, I hope this man's rep does actually try to improve conditions for male students and to figure out why fewer men compared to women are enrolled (assuming it's true for that uni). As well, perhaps he can work with the women's rep to improve equality for both (because, quite frankly, they probably aren't equal now).
Pity this is probably just a stupid ploy to devalue gender as a category and the women's rep position. Can you tell me if that is what it is? |
