>the fact that half or more of the US population agrees with the man on most issues

This is wrong. More than half of the US population who voted thought Bush was better than Gore. They may have disagreed with him on nearly everything, but disagreed with Gore more.

Secondly Bush didn't get a straight majority of those that voted, just a majority of electoral college votes instead.

Any politician voted in on a somewhat slender majority should not say 'and the people agree with me' on issues. He may welll be wrong, and so should refain from pushing obviously controversial issues through if he has a weak mandate.

Finally, you can give a person respect for reaching an office, IF you know nothing else about them. The respect might not last if you research their history, or see what they do holding the office. Anyone becoming POTUS will have had their past researched and published so much it is possible for someone to have no respect for them. This can be a considered opinion, not a knee jerk response. If you hold this opinion, why should you not tell other people about it? If someone only hears from people who agree with them, they'll end up thinking everone agrees with them.
