Could someone give me a hint here? by Control2006-11-19 12:55:59
  A couple options by codemachine 2004-02-05 08:33:36
Your best option is to go to rpmfind.net and search for pcap - you might find a Suse RPM for it, or even a non-Suse RPM that would work on your system (Update: I just looked and there are Suse 8.2 RPMs available - they may work for you).

I also noticed at the bottom of the site this notice:
The source code for libpcap is available from ftp://ftp.ee.lbl.gov/libpcap.tar.Z

You could try installing that module from source and then forcing the install of your app (RPM won't see things installed through source, so it will assume libpcap is missing even after you've installed it from source - read up on 'checkinstall' if you want to fix this). Forcing the package manager is generally a bad way to do things though.

I'm used to Mandrake's package manager, which will solve dependancies for you. Do you know if Suse use apt-get or yum for packages, or is it just plain RPM? If not, at some point you might want to look at getting apt-get or yum configured on your machine to take care of software intallations.
