| Southpark and LDS |

I wasn't sure if the southpark that was on last night at around 11pm central was new or not, but it dealt heavily with Mormonism in a fairly heavy handed way. The ultimate byline of the show was a good one, that it didn't mater if your religion was founded by a looney if being a member made you happy and improved your quality of life. As a member of a denomination founded by someone who was effectively a mass murderer (Episopalian -- Woo King George) I can certainly appreciate the sentiment. The show portrayed the Mormons as extremely nice people who were very active in sharing their faith and its stories while being a bit blind to the ... peculiarities of them.
My knowlege of the LDS faith and doctrine is third or fourth hand, but the basic story as presented seemed to jive with my limited knowledge of the revelation around which the LDS church was founded despite the obvious caricature of the figures involved and the obvious bias that it was a silly thing to believe in.
I am very currious if anyone else (especially slacktime or one of the other LDS folks) saw the show, and if so if you had any commentary/rebutal.
I know this is a potentially sensitive topic and I really don't want this to get nasty, so please keep things respectful. |
