SDP Repost: Looking for hardware recommendations by pk2317 2006-11-19 12:55:59
As I mentioned yesterday, I'm going to be building my own computer within the next month or so. I haven't been following hardware much recently, so I don't know what's good, bad, cheap, expensive, etc. I'm looking for whatever help you're willing to give me.

I'm going to be checking out Newegg, as was recommended to me, and also Pricewatch. I'm just wondering what your recommendations are. I don't think this should come to more than a couple hundred for what I need, since I already have a bunch of stuff.

So, again, here's the link to my diary thread (with much thanks to the people who have already posted), and a copy of what I have listed there:
What I want:
  • Motherboard
  • CPU - somewhere around the 2 GHz range
  • Memory - at least 1 GB, likely more. RAM is cheap.
  • Video card - doesn't have to be "the best", I'm not a gamer. Something good, and at some point in the future I'll be looking to use a dual-monitor setup. Also, TV in/out wouldn't be bad, but I don't really need it.
  • Sound card - Again, not "the best", but something decent. Surround sound, 5.1 channel, whatever it is that I need :-)
  • Hard drive - something small (10 GB?), just enough for the OS
What I have:
  • Case - 6 bay ATX case w/ 400W power supply
  • Hard drive - 120 GB
  • Media - 52x CD-RW drive
  • Monitor - 21" flatscreen
  • Keyboard/Mouse/Speakers
What I can (will) get cheaply:
  • Floppy drive
  • NIC
  • DVD-ROM, eventually
The OS will be Windows 2000, which I have, until I can get XP Pro.

Again, thanks for all your help!
