UK Ufie needs US advice by karaken122004-01-24 15:32:25

one warning tho by Celticess 2004-01-24 20:49:35
most american food is pretty good but avoid their chocolate or if you eat it do so knowing the following:

they do carry the odd bit of cadbury not sure if they carry any nestle. Hershey is the only good commonly available american chocolate and it's typically dark chocolate. Most their chocolate tastes like cocoa powder was used or malt. They also use alot of fillers in their chocolate.(carnuba wax or something was one of them)

Clear pops can even contain caffine... read the labels first. Somethings limited in pop in the UK isn't there. Tho if your lucky you might find a shop selling irn bru typically afik US doesn't carry it.(we get it in canada in 355ml bottles in the import sections)

If you say crisps people will wonder what your talking about or think you mean a cracker of some sort... however say fries or wedgies and they'll understand you just fine.

be prepared for their television... in the UK due to the tv tax you don't get much commercial wise. Expect a commercial every 15min lasting about 5 min consisting of a variety of commercials.

An american newspaper isn't a light object... they are considerably thick. Thicker than the canadian ones if I remember right and the sunday funnies are almost a newspaper on their own.

While street venders may have some neat stuff... beware tourists are easy marks. Speaking of which keep travellers cheques for safety... most cities aren't too bad but people will try to palm credit cards even up here and check bills well to make sure charges are correct. When in a restuarant tip minimum of 14%... I stress minimum because servers make very little money in most cases and they see some foreigners as being cheap simply because if we are from another country our minimum wages and work standards are diffrent.(ie we may get proper health benifits and such and our wages might be alot higher)

Diffrent states have diffrent seatbelt laws... better safe than sorry and buckle up. Same with helmets if using a motorcycle or bike.

Drink bottled water. I suggest this for your own enjoyment of the trip. Nothing wrong with american water but it is treated water and might be treated diffrently than water you normally consume. This could make you quite ill. I had this unfortunate experience once visiting LA when I was a kid... nevada was ok but I was careful how much of the water I got... oregon was also ok... but LA's water was alot diffrent from my own and made me end up in the fetal position for awhile in considerable pain... if I ever return to LA I will not drink their water again. Locals drink it fine but I'm not a local so my body can't handle it the same.

Be prepared for significant air quality change. My understanding(I had 2 ex bf from the UK and also I'm first generation cdn as my moms mom and my dad and his family all came from the UK) is that it is horrible air quality in the UK... depending on where you live you get hit by pollution sweeping over from europe. After a few days in north american even with what pollution we do have you'll likely notice your sense of smell changing amoung other things.

In buying clothing check the sewing at important joings(underarms for example)... if they used certain types of thread it will fall appart in no time. Incase it looked good/fine and you did get it and it wasn't carry a small travel sewing kit...

Remember to bring an adapter kit for your personal appliances. If not some electronics store is bound to carry a box of adapters. :)
