If you're into colonial America at all you can visit Williamsburg, VA near DC. There's also one near Boston but I cannot remember the name. I visited both as a kid. They're actual living colonial towns; kinda like a step in the past. Quite interesting if your into some history.

I also used to live in DC and my best advice there is to take public transportation. I know this may sound strange but it's a nightmare trying to drive in downtown DC at ANY time. They subway can take you within a few blocks of anywhere in the city you want to go and it shouldn't be too expensive (a few dollars when I was there). I'm personally a big aviation fan and the National Air and Space Museum is downtown with some AMAZING displays.
