I would suggest the following:
- San Antonio, TX -- I like this because of the historical buildings (especially the Alamo which really isn't much)
- Albuquerque, NM -- if you really want to see what the southwest part of the US really is about
- Denver, CO -- "Mile High City"; you will be able to be in the middle of the (US) Rocky Mountains -- hit the slopes! Ski!
- Chicago -- 3rd largest US city; lots to do
- DC -- national capital as you already know; many sights to see.
- Boston, MA -- early settlements, "old" US
...and places I would avoid:
- Los Angelas, CA -- crowded, smog, other than Hollywood it's not worth it.
- Seattle, WA -- You will only be in the rain in March...
- Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN -- cold, and not many attractions for the tourist
Other than that I think you have some good places to go.
