... ran back into traffic and turned into ground hamburger and kindling... I *really* wanted to keep it, too.... it was a NICE 10 pt.... grrr....
The truck impact broke its back legs and messed it up real bad. It lay in the median for a while before pulling itself back into traffic. Unfortunately, I couldn't do anything to stop it. I didn't have any gun to put it out of its misery, and it probably would have been illegal to do so anyway (near a suburban area, after dark, not during gun season, and without a permit....). I had turned my back to try to flag down anyone to help (cell phone, anyone?) and when I turned around again it was in the middle of traffic, and got hit multiple more times- this time while it was down so it was more like a speed bump, and didn't cause damage to the other vehicles. The last vehicle I saw hit it was a little car that swerved to miss it and ran over the head, breaking the antlers into teensy splinters.
A very not-nice thing, all around. Laws around here permit the person who hits a deer to keep it so the meat isn't wasted- well, that one was VERY wasted.
My Dad told me that the next time I go deer hunting, I should remember to use a gun and bring the meat back.... |
