it's not necessarily slavery to work enough to provide for oneself. I think gardening would probably be a more pleasant pastime and more useful skill than many. I do have a problem with the "Prison Blues" type venture, but I think self-provision is not in the same league as the enrichment of others. I personally don't have a problem with paying workers either, though I'm not sure I would pay them directly while they were in prison. Set up savings accounts for them and their families and provide basic financial training, perhaps, I don't know what would be best. I would like to see those who've served a sentence leave prison *less* likely to return rather than moreso, and I think making sure they leave with some employable skills would be a good idea.
