Manson was given the death penalty, Rose Bird and Co remanded that to life without parole. He comes up for parole hearings on a regular basis now, because denying parole was not considered just. The point is, Life is a long time. You can't know the political changes during that lifetime. Some dweebs might actually let Manson loose one day.
