Our past is full of anger, violence, hatred, bigotry and abuse. Itis also full of great thinkers, immense sacrifices, and selfless acts. But to say you should 'respect it' just because it is past is shallow.

People and life are the same way. You can't 'respect' a grouping that is so diverse.

What there needs to be is not thoughtless respect, but geniune interest and understanding.
