A topic that's been bothering me for some time. by kyrasantae2004-01-15 07:10:15
I guess I chose the wrong words for the question by kyrasantae2004-01-15 07:26:06

The mass media are about advertising by JohnClarke 2004-01-15 09:54:31
and the ad money is controlled by people in positions of authority in large corporations, and those people typically are in their 50s and later--it takes a while to get that far up the ladder. But those people had most of their attitude formed when they were in their teens.

The advertisers get upset if they see content that they think is going to turn people away from their ads. So what we see on TV and in the mass media is what was acceptable to teenagers 20-30 years ago. The Sixties were when the "sexual revolution" happened and the "drug culture" became recognized as something other than fringe phenomenon. People who grew up in the '60s are now coming into positions where they can control content and we're seeing the result--much less restraint in matters of sexuality and drugs. On the other hand, the generation of the '60s also started exploring religious alternatives--we didn't just go for mainstream Christianity but started exploring Buddhism, Taoism, and other Eastern religions--possibly people were bringing that back from Vietnam--so we're seeing less emphasis on "traditional Christian values" than we did and Christianity per se is getting short shrift in the mainstream entertainment media--it's still there though--consider "Joan of Arcadia" for example.

At least that's my opinion.
