i'm rather proud of myself by psychoi3oy 2004-01-15 09:27:50
though i'm not officially on atkins yet i ordered my breakfast burrito without hashbrowns this morning (still had a tortilla, gotta get used to not eating that), i walked UP all 8 floors of stairs in one of the buildings i patroll as well as down (i normally go up the elevator and down the stairs), and i said no to a (what i know from experience) very good cinnamon roll. the roll is still sitting here but the thought of that much sugar makes me almost nauseaus.

still reading the akins book, still contemplating.

I was planning on starting this upcomming weekend but have heard things about ketoacidosis that do not sound pleasant. My wife (going to vet tech school) has an anatomy & phisiology teacher that described what happens with ketoacidosis and how if the blood gets too acidic (from the acetone produced by burning fat) the potassium will exit the cells and you'll die instantly of a heart attack. The Atkins book says it's only a big problem for diabetics and not as much of a risk for non-diabetics. Krisguy said it can be a problem for non-diabetics, too. I know about the test strips for ketones but have heard conflicting information about them. Atkins seems to think the darker they are, the better because it means you're burning more fat. but the darker they are, the more ketones and acid are in your system, and the closer you are to ketoacidosis. i'm rather concerned and slightly scared. the atkins book reads like an informercial and tends to brush off any and all negatives with trite answers and "but you'll feel so much better" or "you'll lose weight" stuff. grrr.

anywho, that's enough ranting for now, i've gotta go do soemthign else to get my mind off all this crap.
