Question of the Day! by kickstart2006-11-19 12:26:49
Whatever you're working on, shut it off first. by NOLAWitch2004-01-15 05:51:54

Hmm.. well, they're the same, electrically, as by julius.apweiler 2004-01-15 08:57:53
the old AT keyboard plugs, aren't they? Quite a different beast from PS/2 mice, really. Anyway, I've 'hot-swapped' AT keyboards quite a lot, and it's not a problem at all. Ever seen the 'Keyboard not found. Press F1 to continue' message? It's not as stupid as it sounds. Plug in a keyboard and press F1 on it. Similarly, a machine set to boot without keyboard will accept a keyboard being plugged in later. In theory at least, machines with PS/2 connectors should work the same way.

My MS Natural Keyboard at home is interesting - it's got both USB and AT/PS/2 connectors. When both are plugged in, the USB part just acts as a USB hub (there are two ports on the keyboard); when the PS/2 is unplugged, it becomes a USB keyboard as well. So when both are plugged in, and I pull the PS/2 plug, the machine (if properly USB enabled -i.e. Win98 doesn't always like this) continues to work, with an interruption of maybe a few seconds.
