I look slightly upwards most of the time, and remember what the ground is going to be like. It's good practise for when you have to walk around in the pitch darkness, because you remember where all the stationary items are. Doesn't help with avoiding walking into actors though, as much as we'd like to, they won't let us nail them to boards to carry them onto and off the stage.
