3 out of 4 work-days now we have had problems with our Internet connection. The first two were ISP problems, but today ... Grrrr...
I'm working the late shift now so I arrive at 11:00 and am told that in about 15 minutes the Internet access will go down for the whole campus for about 30 minutes. About 45 minutes later the access finally went down and stayed down. When I was on my way out the door to lunch I heard behind me that it was finally back up. At lunch I joked that it was timed for me and that as soon as I got back from lunch it would go down for the whole campus again for the rest of the day. Sure enough, that's almost exactly what happened. The connection went down before I got back from lunch and stayed down until one hour before I go home, which is well after most of the other workers go home.
I'm trying to figure out what possibly possesses a person's mind to make them think it is a good idea to schedule potentially crippling maintenance at a small college during the middle of the second day of the semester while many students were registering, adding classes, dropping classes, taking Internet-based assessment tests, and starting their on-line classes. Not only was all Internet access down, preventing me from doing most of my tasks today (not to mention locking me out of UF on my breaks), portions of our LAN were down as well preventing Admissions and Records from processing and adds or drops and preventing the counsellors from looking at student records or checking to see if classes still have room.
So, lets see, in the middle of peak business start messing with the one point of failure that can take down 90 percent (my wild guestimation) of your potential for procuctivity. Yeah, that's a great idea.
All that and I couldn't view UF, play Net games, or telnet to my shell account while I was prevented from working! What a day! At least I wasn't quite reduced to solitare for the day. </rant> |
