This has certainly left the discussion of free speech and the heinous person who's actions started this thread!

People are incarcerated, on the whole, for crimes. And no, I'm not going to get into an argument about what is a crime and what isn't, wiser people than I (presumably) have made those decisions. I choose to abide by the laws of our society, or break those laws and risk incarceration. My choice. So knowingly I can deprive MYSELF of liberty and happiness by committing a crime.

And before we go there, yes it is a flawed system and yes, innocent people do go to jail. But it's pretty much the best thing going out there, and I haven't heard of any better solutions...
