If you put the uplink line into one of the internal ports on a DHCP-enabled router, the router will start serving addresses to the rest of the network. These addresses will be on the wrong logical network, and everything will get confused. If you plug in and configure your router correctly, not only will it not cause problems for anyone, it will be darn hard for them to even detect that there is a router there (as opposed to a decent software firewall).
