I'm surprised they are disallowing "DHCP Servers" by abaron2004-01-13 16:24:49

is here:

To: All Resnet Users
From: Resnet

In the past few days Resnet has seen a significant increase in student operated DHCP servers appearing on the network. This has resulted in 8 students having their Ethernet jacks disabled.

Any software or device that is run on the Residential Network (Resnet) that prevents the school's DHCP server from functioning properly for all users is a violation of the school's Code of Conduct for Computer and Network Use.

It also prevents other users from accessing the school's network and is a disruption of services for entire buildings in some cases.
This includes a DHCP server or IP Address Sharing in Windows XP or Mac OS X:
YOUR ETHERNET JACK WILL BE DISABLED!

ITS Technical Support Services or Resnet staff will disable the network jacks in these cases immediately and without prior notice to the user. If you think that you may have activated this on your computer or network device, make sure that you have turned it off. You may contact the Resnet Office at the numbers below for assistance with this.

---end email----

I don't really understand how it could be interfereing with what they have going on though. I registered it so it has it's own static IP. and the only part of it that connects to their network is out the wan port. as far as I know the router can't effect changes on other network devices all on its own out the wan port.

As for controlling the number of computers we have, someone down the hall has 7 IP's from them I think. a couple for his laptop, pda, desktop etc.
