Let's just hope the two of us never end up as neighbours ;-) - I joined the rowing club here at the Uni, and I've realised just how deeply I am not athletic-minded. Sure, the exercise is good, and I do want to keep doing it, but the whole mindset of these real athletes in the various clubs is just not mine. I can't really express it any better than that. But maybe I'm just not, well, a competitive athlete. I even enjoy a certain level of exercise.
Apart from that - cycling sounds good, Exeter is not brilliant on this one (although I suppose it's not bad - most important roads are actually pretty small, and there are marked bike paths/lanes in many places). Apart from that, the only thing I can say is that for me, the city shouldn't be too big (though even that's not an absolute) - apart from that, I haven't lived in enough places to know in what kind of city I'd be happiest. I do know that I haven't seen any city that made me think 'whoa, I'd like to live here for the rest of my life'. I like Exeter so far, but it's not that. Luxembourg definitely isn't, but then I didn't live in the city there. Münster in Germany has a nice feel to it; Osnabrück, which is very close to it, has apparently been rated the best city in Germany to live in (as has, supposedly, Exeter for the UK). Prague is beautiful, though I'm not sure it's a good place to live. I liked Barcelona, but that's too big and too hot for me. Can't think of any other notable cities I've been to recently... a couple in Germany I suppose, Berlin, Cologne, ... |
