After reading all the responses, it seems that Olympia, Washington should be right in there. We have:
Big water (ok, so it's the end of Puget Sound, but it's salty and we have sailboat races and seals and whales...)
The Olympics AND the Cascades on the skyline
Not only a zillion coffee shops, but we have our own coffee roaster: Batdorf & Bronson.
It's the state capitol, so there's a lot of history & heritage AND politics, but only half the year. The politics. Only half the year for the politics...
There's a crazy school here, TESC with a clam for a mascot...the Fighting Geoducks (and if you can pronounce that correctly, you're already halfway here...)
There are some good tech jobs here, it's far enough away from Redmond for comfort. If you need more than the local arts scene can provide, it's only a 50 mile drive to downtown Seattle.
My favorite part, though, is the community. It's pretty liberal and crazy with lots of community involvement in the arts, politics, social justice and just plain having fun. People smile at you on the street and there are true neighborhoods within walking distance of the downtown core.
The OLUG group seems to be having some problems with the web page though. I'd better drop them a line...
