I follow my own (and hopefully others') rules about how to do it, though. Being logically consistent is high on the list.

If I don't win, then I become stronger for next time. If I _do_ win, I have not gained, but the opponent has the opportunity to become stronger.

Also, as you know, winning is not determined by the loser admitting defeat, much as they would wish otherwise.
