... even at the risk of *being* persuaded. ;-)

To do so effectively, the rules of formal debate are of limited use -- they usually apply more to intellectual contest than to elucidating the truth.

This is especially true in modern North America , where "everyone has a right to his their opinion", and bare exposure of flaws in logic or factual errors are usually treated as personal attacks rather than as well-intentioned "arguement".

Rather odd for a society that prides itself on democratic values, but unfortunately still true far more often than not.
