I'm not sure who said that, but his point was that simply "winning" doesn't generally anyone's mind.
In my own case, I've found that *really* changing my mind on anything significant is likely to require -- in addition to good arguements and solid facts -- at least a good night's sleep to let the new perspective to really sink in. (I sometimes adapt more quickly than that, but not terribly often).
OK, so I tend to be stubborn and defensive, especially during the course of a heated discussion. I suspect that I'm pretty typical in that regard. I try to take it into account. In fact, I'd rate my ability to revise my beliefs and opinions as rather *above* the average. Yes, that is a troublesome notion. |
