For the US, removing a leader that they would prefer to have removed is the same as another country (USSR? Cuba?) removing a leader they would prefer to have removed.

Reasons for removal are so numerous that they are irrelevant to the argument. The loss to the world in general will not be an important consideration in whoever is ordering the assassination, IMO. Rather, if loss to the world IS a consideration, then the more moral leaders are less likely to order such assassinations, and the targets are more likely to be of a higher moral standing than not.

There is currently an international treaty banning political assassination, and I hope that the potential repercussions of breaking this treaty will prevent anybody from starting a program of this type. Without going into detail, the end result of political assassination becoming popular will definitely make this world a worse place to be.

'Awwww, just this once' is NOT a good argument for the US to assassinate Saddam. And the consequences of breaking the ban on political assassination are dire enough that I thank $DEITY that Bush was not stupid enough to try.

It is not so much the moral wrong that makes me abhor political assassination - assassinating one person is as wrong, morally, as starting a war that kills millions. It is the 'climate' that acceptance of political assassination will create that I sincerely hope will continue to be a nightmare only.

Wars are acceptable political tools, assassination is not. And I hope that the only change will be to make wars unacceptable as well.
