If you don't and you pretend you meant the new thing all along when you didn't, then yeah, you're a jerk. I know that I've done that on occasion, and that I really *have* meant "the new thing" all along.

This goes back to the person in question, and how good their personal integrity is, and how much you believe them when they say something.

I can see it both ways.
