The purpose of arguing by subbywan2004-01-13 11:49:09

"did they read what you intended?" I've seen in many of my own posts that people read something into the post I did not intend. And I've read things into others peoples postings they didn't mean.

The scoring points comment goes back to arguing to win. At least (see, what I mean? :), that's how I read it. If you're arguing to score points, the idea is to get more points than your opponent, giving you a win. I know I reinterpret what others say all the time, because I want to understand more about the different ways they could be looking at a item and I know I reinterpret what I say 1) to try and explain something in a different way to someone I think missed my point, 2) to clarify my own point (like what exactly do we mean by "force") and 3) to clarify things to myself.

As for playing devils advocate, i think that's just one reason to argue the others point. I think people claim "i was just playing the devils advocate" far too glibly. I've come across very few situations where i didn't agree in some way with my opponent. I've had precious few people that i've *completely* disagreed with. In many of those cases, I'm may argue either a point I do agree with in the oppositions view, or I may try to poke wholes in their argument to see what their reasoning is for it.

I've found precious few arguments where I couldn't ,learn *something*, even if it was merely a different way to counter one of my own arguments.
