The purpose of debate is to:
1) gain a better, deeper understanding of ones own point of view
2) gain insight and understanding about alternate points of view
3) gather facts, contemplate and learn.
In a debate, I really try to keep an open mind, and when a good, well constructed point is expressed I have been known to change my opinions. But I've got high standards, so it better be good, defensible, non judgemental and fact-based.
