The purpose of arguing by subbywan2004-01-13 11:49:09
*commits random act of force on subbywan* by Naruki 2004-01-13 12:07:04
He he he.

One flaw with that saying is that it automatically equates all stupid people with disagreeable smart people. Just how does it manage that? ;-)

If I were to surround myself with people who agree with me, I'd be a _very_ lonely troll.

I'd say it's only pigheaded when you don't listen to the other side and you continuously try to reinterpret what you and they are saying in order to score points. Ranking those three in ascending order of pigheadedness, we have:
1) reinterpreting what they say
2) reinterpreting what you said
3) ignoring what they say

1 is sometimes forgiveable if you just didn't understand what they were trying to say. 2 & 3 are not forgiveable at all, though 2 can be diminished on grounds of partial illiteracy (you use a word in multiple ways without realizing that it's fallacious to do so).

At least, that's what I think right now.

Oh, and as for the "Devil's Advocate" method: it's okay to use it to honestly try to find weaknesses in an argument, as long as you aren't trying to
a) teach the other party how to think or
b) misrepresenting your argument as your actual opinion.

It's infuriating for someone to choose a topic they don't actually support simply because they arrogantly believe everyone else needs to learn something. And it's intellectually dishonest to pretend that you do support it.
