Look at the world around you. by LurkerMo 2004-01-13 11:53:36
The US has 'won' the 'war' in Iraq. There are more soldiers dying now than when there was open combat. So much for the theory that the biggest guns 'win'.

World opinion of the US has gone down considerably because of this war. That makes it more difficult for US businesses to make sales internationally. As a result, the US economy is suffering. If the US 'wins' more 'wars' like the one in Iraq, it could very well cease to exist as an independent country.
So much for the success of military force.

Personally, I believe that violence solves nothing. Military force is only a tool. It can be applied in international relations just like any of the other tools - economy, trade, opinion, etc. And applying this particular tool has a cost in the effectiveness of other tools.

The police force in any country has force as one of the tools it can use to do its job. However, respect for authority is a much better tool, and use of force will often erode respect. Which means that force is the least authoritative of the tools available to a police force.

IMO force (military, armed, physical) is the last resort. When someone has to resort to using armed force, it is (in my mind) an admission of incompetence in using other, better tools.
