The drive was being cranky about accepting floppies, and so I was jiggling to see if there was some magic trick. My postmortem analysis is that the jiggling hit the switches that sense write-protection and double-sidedness. One of the traces to those was completely fried and the board underneath was scorched. Hence the copious smoke. $DIETY only knows why there was enough current in them to burn it so badly.
