AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!! by Didactylos 2004-01-13 10:55:54
Time for a rant about stupid tech support people (and maybe some smart tech support people can give me some help?)

Ever since there was a power outage in the area a couple of days ago, my cable modem has intermittently been going off line. I called tech support, and they told me (after wasting my time for ages and telling me to TURN OFF MY FIREWALL) that I would have to call back while it was offline, without rebooing it. So it went off again, and I called again, and the idiot led me through rebooting the modem (slowly, without explaining what he was doing). Fortunately, I was smart enough to see where he was going, and I explained what the previous tech has told me, before (unnecessarily) powering my PC down. Unfortunately, he insisted. Then the jerk put me on hold for 10 minutes while he talked to 2nd tier techs - then came back and told me what the first tech told me - they could do nothing with the modem rebooted and working!

So, what do you do when you know more than the tech (without hurting their feelings too much), and what can you do about an intermittent fault either with a cable modem or at any point further down the line?
