the general population (although I will admit this knowledge comes from Discovery Channel, so it may well not be applicable to all jails).
They're housed on their own in individual cells. They're not permitted direct contact with any other prisoners.
When they're taking out of the cell, they are made to put their hands through the food slot/handcuff slot, where they are first chained/handcuffed, before a guard even unlocks the cell door.
If the guards *know* there's, say, a knife, they can get the knife *before* they approach the cell to handcuff the prisoner.
