I think it was because someone pulled a wire off of a big phone switch in the Central Office. Expect to lose BOTH dialtone AND DSL before it's fixed. my repair cycle went like this: no dialtone yes DSL no service of any kind dialtone phone and DSL service restored. Note that each of these phases took hours or DAYS. I think it took Verizon 2 weeks to completely resolve the issue. In your case, I truly hope it's weather-related.
