more important than graphics card. X determines the available modes by horizontal and vertical refresh rates. You don't want to go over the specified for your monitor (might do damage), but you don't want to be too safe either (you won't get too much modes)...

For very old monitors (that I didn't find specs to) I've picked refresh rates way out of specs and the picture is sometimes horizontally and/or vertically wrapped (not good). Then I've just restricted to modes that do work (in the config). Do not try this procedure at home! ^_^
