There appears to be no basis for what the alert level du jour is, so it's hard for people to say "oh, that makes perfect sense." They spit out an alert level, say "hey, look out for some random crap that could signal the downfall of civilization" and expect everybody to be an instant intel agent. This doesn't have any effect other than to scare the people who take stock in them.
They (news agencies posting the alert level, the government) keep telling us that an attack won't neccessarily fit a profile. How are we supposed to know what to look for? We aren't. Talk about stress; you have to report anything that looks suspitious, but how do you know where to draw the line? "Look out! That guy is talking about how he wants to get a pilot's license!" "This guy wants to buy shoes with more toe room than the ones he's trying on now!"
There aren't a lot of people that claim the alert levels are a conspiracy. Most people (including myself) just believe they are, at best, useless. At worst, I think they're detrimental to the mental health of a lot of US citizens. |
