where I am the spca does news bits on a few programs on at least one channel. They have a pet of the day from one of the shelters around the lowermainland(vancouver area cities). They also speak a bit on other animals in the shelter and a bit on awareness on animals needs, etc. They specifically do peices warning people about buying pets as presents and issues with getting certain types of pets. This all adds to public awareness of pet issues.
