and our rules here are diffrent... specifically the community rules in Coquitlam, BC where we have strict pet guidlines. Also as I stated where I am things are diffrent obviously from where you are. I know that yes in parts of the US there are serious pet issues and probably only a few parts aren't so bad. But the pet issues you experience there are very diffrent from here. We have strict leash laws and a variety of other pet laws. I did have them come door to door one year to check my cat was registered and had been fixed. My cat is also an indoor cat. Similarly when I was still with my exhusband (actually before we were married and when we were only dating) I saw people go door to door to check for registration and that animals were fixed. He did have purebreed dobies. One unfortunately had the docking and ear thing done(it was Storm and he appeared in Rambo first blood... long story how my ex came to own him after that movie was done)... the other dog had her tail docked but not her ears... my ex couldn't bring himself to do that to her and he had her since she was small.

Here it is uncommon for those that aren't at least upper middle class to own a true purebreed. Reason being they are very expensive to purchase and must go with paperwork. More often most people have mixed breed pets or have purebreeds that either they don't breed or only breed once or twice then have them fixed.(such was the case with the border collie parents of my sons dog over at his dads house... his dads friend gave my daughter the dog a few months before she died and "sophie" has been fixed because they don't want to breed her).

The only real concern pet wise with some petstores is birds. But the places that had serious problems were made public on the news and went out of business. I remember one I got budgies from and the budgies had been "farm breed" in the sense they were got en mass I take it because it was so afraid it would starve despite me putting out lots of food it over ate and died of that.(it was huge when it died... and I've never seen a bird eat like that before) I was disgusted and told everyone I knew about that store at the time... later they got exposed for using puppy farm dogs and either the government shut them down or they lost enough business they went bankrupt. Most the small pet stores I know tho do really care about the animals and get very attached to them. Some if they can't find them a home they take them home or get them into a fostering program. My roommates sister fostered cats for about 2 yrs trying to find them homes... they were truely lovely older kitties.

Btw had my sons father bought "sophie" she'd of cost around $300+... had I bought my himyalan from a breeder it would of cost me $500. My parents poodle when they bought it cost them around $500 and this was many years ago. Purebreeds here aren't cheap even if they don't come with paperwork... and they typically are sold already with shots either way. My current cat is a bit of a mutt... but she's a sweetie. Her mom died during childbirth and it was her moms first litter. I hope the owners fixed the male(but that owner is one of the ditz that do avoid such things)... anyways Angel was hand fed and raised by humans she still doesn't get some "cat" things. she's also afraid of outdoors... Yes she's checked outside 2x... once got beat up when she snuck out but in general she's afraid enough you can leave the door open and she wont go off the patio.(rare I let her get to that stage tho... usually she just sniffs the air at the door)... She is fixed and I got her fixed as soon as she was old enough, she's also had her shots.

Btw at the shelters here they have many animals not just cats and dogs. Cats and dogs get the most attention because they tend to be the largest volume in the shelters. Pet shelters here get everything from hedgehogs, to rabbits, and turtles. Turtles are a hard one as they carry salmonella and people don't realize they aren't necisarily so easy to take care of... They don't really get fish but they've got lizards and snakes on occasion. Wild ones that come in they usually try to rehab and re release so are sent to special shelters.
