specific feature. They just put two of the same breed together to go at it for a non mutt puppie output. Until people started shipping various breeds all over the place dogs could only breed with their own kind or a very limited choice of other kinds... so mutts are for the most part a man made breed.
There are a few breeds people did "make" and they did so for specific physical features but I don't think they really had much clue on the health problems it could cause. Some of the health problems aren't caused by initial breeding but by inbreeding bringing out recessive genes. This is a serious problem seen with hymilayan cats. I had one I got from a pet shelter(canadian spca). He was beautiful, intellegent, and sweet. But he also died several years later from leukemia. Leukmia isn't uncommon in persians I think(or maybe it was siamese) and of course their genetics are from persian and siamese. If you read on the web you'll find they were bread to create a long haired siamese with a persian face. A similar cat is a Burmese if I remember right however a burmese is natrually how it is and hasn't been a deliberate genetic messing about like hymilaians. They tried several times before they got the himilayan breed genetics just right. Then to maintain the appearance they had to imbreed. So every single himilayan purebed on this planet is related. I read a story once on the woman that had created the breed. They are beautiful cats but have illnesses that belong to both persians and siamese purebreds and they get those illnesses at a higher rate than either persians or siamese do... and that is recessive genetics of both breeds of cat that aren't so recessive in the himilayan they are actually the norm in them. I'm not sure if any breeder has messed with dogs genetics in this fashion tho.
I don't think breeders initially do it aware that x bad things will come out. They are breeders not geneticists. And as said the initial breeding trials don't necisarily cause the issues it's the inbreeding to keep the new species going that does. Now if a persian and siamese got it on on their own and ended up with some pretty himilayan like babies so be it but himylans as a breed have gone beyond that now.
Btw my cousin is a dog breeder and trainer in Redmond, Wa, USA. She has sold dogs to some rather famous people... Hosay<sp> Concerto<sp> has a rather cute little one called "shorty"... shorty I met when he was a pugsly little pup all rolly polly and being trained.(she primarily breeds and trains for disabled service dogs like the institute for the blind) My cousin makes sure when she breeds that they watch the breeding pool as she is aware of genetics no nos of too much inbreeding in a species. She also is very gentle in her training of the animals and also is considerate on breeding.(some breeders keep the poor animals pregnant all the time for example)... but everyone in the industry is well aware of people that go too far for show purposes or whatever. The good ones keep away from that and the puppy farm type things. |
