In the second and third centuries C.E. ( common era, A.D. to you Christians,) the Rabbinate was concerned about the celebration of what was basically a war victory, and created the myth of the oil. This was to change the celebration from a martial to spiritual viewpoint. It is actually one of the most minor of holidays, but gains prominence to the rest of the world due to its' proximity to Christmas.
