Proxy help/advice needed. by ahecht 2003-12-21 12:28:55
I have a couple of problems with my internet connection here at school that I think I could solve with the proper use of a proxy server, but I'm not sure at all how to proceede.

The first problem is that the school's usenet server is lousy, and doesn't carry many channels that I can get at home with Earthlink. Earthlink, however, only allows connections to their news servers from their IP address range (even though they are also password protected). Therefore, I want to set up a proxy server on my computer at home (with earthlink) that will allow me to have an Earthlink IP address and connect to the news server.

The second problem is that my school has a firewall for blocking all P2P services, which unfortunatly also blocks out all BitTorrent services as well. This severely hampers a lot a legitimate activity on the web (such as downloading new RvB epiosdes). I would like to set up some kind of tunneling though my home computer to allow me to access services such as BitTorrent.

I have no idea how any of this stuff works, or if I am even using the correct terminology here. What would I need to do this? Ideally, I want a free (or even open source) solution that will run on WinXP. I can't use something like remote desktop, as people need to be able to use the computer at home all the time.

Thanks in advance.
