he managed to get all the way to Mordor without the ring completely taking him over. He could have turned back at any time and attempted to keep the ring for himself. The fact that he didn't is commendable. Sure, it overtook him while he was in Mt. Doom, but he still got it there. Had he not made it that far, the circumstances he couldn't control wouldn't have resulted in the destruction of the ring.
