during one of the times their people were dealing with strife they were in hiding. They had only enough oil for lamps and such for 3 days. However they had a miracle and it lasted 8 days. Hence a candle for each day of the miracle... and I think a slightly diffrent meal is served each day and there are certain celebrations at diffrent points of it too. I was told by my son tho who is a practicing jew that hannika is a lesser holiday. Yom Kipper is more important.
