basically satin and canvas with leather soles (several strips sometimes, sometimes just thick leather) with some sort of size to make the toes hard. The glues used vary - some northern glues dont do well in humid/very hot climates.
If you have been taught correctly (which many havent), you "pull up off the back of the shoe" - in which case it will be the length of the vamp and hardness of the toe capsule that you will pay attention to. Beginners, and many who have not had detailed tuition dance "in the shoe", and will require hard soles.
I preferred medium hardness with a firm vamp. I have at various times attacked my shoes with a scalpel to remove too thick an edge on the sole, a hammer on the toes (well, the vamp really, but the edge of the toe capsule was too hard as well), and thumped them with a door against the door frame to soften the sole where the toes are - the arch should stay fairly firm but be flexible enough to allow you to go "through the foot" when coming down off pointe.
I also prefer no padding inside the shoe - some people use a variety of padding in the toes to correct the fit according to the shape of their toes. I find it just gives me blisters. Bleeding toes is something all dancers go thru :P
I dont do toe work any more because I have arthritis in my feet - its like trying to dance on a bed of needles ... where my ankle bones join my feet bones :P
And yes, professionals go through at least a pair a show, sometimes a pair an act if they are very hard on them. |
