Granted it's a joke, but we innately don't think of something as alive unless we can see it move. At first sight of a Venus flytrap, many children will say "it's alive" when it closes, as if it wasn't before. The same is true of a microscope slide. Anything with moving parts seems more "alive" than the rigid cell walls of a plant or the stagnant nature of most dead/inorganic compounds. It's not surprising that we don't consider plant life as valuable, and only see any logical equivalence if pressed.
