I thing it is how tangible the act of killing is. Swatting a mosquito makes a small spot somewhere, squashing a slug makes a certain mess. Snapping the neck of a hare, too much for me. As for killing millions of fungi while doing the dishes, I don't even flinch (except at the stench). Yes, I'm a squeamish kinda guy. =)
