An example of a joke that isn't funny by SnappingTurtle2003-12-19 11:03:10

The Pinkerton saga was a VERY nasty time by Naruki 2003-12-19 18:52:49
in railroad history. They brutally attacked people who were being horribly abused and trying to stand up for their rights. (Unless you know of a modern resurgence of Pinkerton that wasn't quite so bad.)

The priests who recently molested kids were not quite as brutal, though they also had the tacit approval of their leaders.

I think one of us (it may very well be me) doesn't really understand what happened with the Pinkertons way back when. The reaction to picketing we see today is very mild by comparison to then.

In the "jokes" today a seemingly harmless idea (railroads and the church) was shockingly intruded upon by the reminder of bad things that happened in relation to that idea (the Pinkerton "strike-breaking" and the Priest child-molestation).

Why would you bring up such things to someone who obviously cherishes the idea you are lampooning? I see both things as equally rude, since the person hearing the joke had nothing to do with the bad things that actually occurred.

It'd be like you mentioning that you have pictures of Canadian cities and me asking if you have the pictures of the native peoples (would you call them Native Americans?) being murdered for their land.
