I usually keep a bowl of warm-to-hottish (not hot) water to dip them into before playing. And a little mini mag-light is a good directional light source. And the snapping is not just an embarassment ... There's a GOOD chance for the edges ripping into the delicate and tender tissues. Better just to pay more for good equipment to start with and avoid that altogether.
